Human BSE

Anatomy of a health disaster

Record of the Workers Inquiry

New Variant CJD has been confirmed as the human form of BSE. The barrage of lies of first the Tory and now the Blair Labour government can no longer conceal the fact that it represents a continuing public health disaster. Virtually every week brings new and damning evidence of the terrible impact it has and will have on peoples lives.

BSE is not the product of some "natural disaster". It resulted from the insatiable drive for profits in the food industry. That it has now spread into the human population is the direct result of a political set-up which protects the interests of big business at the expense of the social needs of working people.

For this reason, the publications of this record of the Workers Inquiry into BSE/CJD, convened by the Socialist Equality Party in May 1997, is extremely timely. Not only does it contribute towards an understanding of all the factors involved in this crisis, but in doing so it provides a basis for its resolution.
